These two electric trucks are manufactured by Xuzhou Mining Machinery Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group Co., Ltd., China's largest machinery manufacturer. They are used to replace diesel with electricity from renewable energy sources, with no carbon dioxide emissions during driving; In addition, their noise is smaller, which can minimize the impact on surrounding communities.
It is understood that the battery capacity of the two vehicles reaches 525 kilowatt hours, so they can continuously travel along the established route up to 36 times in a day, without the need to park for charging. In addition, they may re accumulate energy during downhill operations, which can reduce the use of mechanical brakes, thereby reducing maintenance work, while also reducing vibration, making the driver's operation more comfortable.
This is the first time such trucks have been used by a major mining company worldwide, and Vale is using them as part of its "power conversion" project. Currently, mining trucks using diesel fuel generate approximately 9% of Vale's "Scope 1" and "Scope 2" emissions. Vale said the launch of these two electric trucks marks another step towards asset electrification. In 2019, Vale announced that its goal is to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. To this end, Vale will invest $4 billion to $6 billion.
Vale said the "power conversion" project aims to replace traditional petroleum energy with clean energy. The project is promoting innovative solutions to electrification of the company's mines and railways. In addition to using 100% electric mining trucks, the asset electrification strategy also includes the use of battery powered electric locomotives in Port Tubarang in Victoria and Port Madeira in St. Louis. Vale is also testing the use of electrical equipment in underground mines in Canada, and currently has approximately 40 equipment in operation. In addition, Vale has jointly launched the "Electrification Challenge" with about 20 peer companies, aiming to improve the safe charging speed of electric mining truck batteries.
The cooperation between XCMG and Vale originated in 2021. On October 26th of that year, XCMG and Vale held a signing ceremony in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, to sign a memorandum of cooperation on the potential supply of mining and infrastructure equipment, including the two 72-ton zero emission battery driven mining trucks. This event is also part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the friendship between the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and China's Jiangsu Province. On May 18, 2022, Vale and XCMG signed a procurement contract in the city of Posu Alegre, Minas Gerais, Brazil, to purchase mining and infrastructure equipment, including five mining graders.
"For us, the cooperation with XCMG will contribute to our long-term partnership with China and help us take another step towards more sustainable mining. Our goal is to work with global partners to further develop and jointly create technologies that respect the environment and enable us to achieve zero emissions." Alexander Pereira, Executive Vice President of Vale Asia Global Business Solutions (Alexandre Pereira).
